Maria Sicoie suggests a bizarre world made up of bicycle remains. Pieces which used to comprise mobile ensembles are extracted and recycled in order to render new shapes of a whole different nature.

The fairy tale of black and white bicycles is a supernatural creation, inspired by the arachnids’ world. The installation comprises creatures made of rusty parts, spokes, handlebar grips and metal frames which rebuild the biological life of an imaginary spider species. Nephila atrata is an ensemble of rebuilt objects that can render movement and life to some inert mechanisms. The concept of mourning and darkness remains a reference which is also comprised in the Latin name of the species, having a meaning in the context of disintegration and recycling of old, worn-out, forgotten objects. Maria Sicoie confers new connotations to the concept of death and rebirth within the given installation, meticulously dealing with the choice and selection of some unconventional materials for her sculptures. Thus, she establishes a bridge between life and death, building living creatures out of the inanimate matter, at the same time instilling that very morbidity that makes every new creature unique through shape and spectacular through movement.

The Nephila atrata creatures have the mortuary and bizarre air of some giant spiders to be found in fictional films, standing on the border between playful and terrifying, between sculptural expressivity and the pseudo-utilitarian aspect of the object to be designed. The miraculous creatures descend from immediate reality and are transposed into simple, nonchromatic frames, thus simulating as plausible an adaptation to the environment as possible. The space of the gallery meets the requirments of a vivacious installation, being invaded by these both artificial and living mechanisms. The artificial nature of things- either they are easily recognisable parts of concrete objects or their transformations into supernatural creatures- makes it hard for us to decode the figurative side of these fabulous representations which almost breathe through the mechanical universe where they come to life.
